To the Power of [REDACTED]
To the Power of [REDACTED] is an esoteric game about finding the values of five different symbols. You can launch the game to figure out the details yourself, but read on for more in-depth instructions!
(In either case, you're welcome to use a calculator!)
How to play:
On the left side of the screen, you will find three columns:
- Column 1: A series of Xs and Ys, arranged in a generic exponential form.
- Column 2: A series of colored squares (at least for level 1)
- Column 3: A series of dropdown boxes
Your goal: Assign the correct value to each colored square using the corresponding drop down boxes.
To do this, you can select one square to become 'x' (the base of an exponential equation) and another to become 'y' (the exponent itself), using the x and y buttons on the left column.
Once an x and y are selected, a "Test Combo" button will appear.
- Clicking this will place the chosen symbols on the right in the form of an exponential equation. The number to the right is the result of that equation.
- Clicking this also starts the timer. This timer resets at the beginning of each level. If time runs out, you lose!
- "Remaining: __" shows how many "Test Combo" clicks you have left. These do not reset between levels!
Once each square has been assigned a number (which do not repeat), the "Guess" button will appear. Clicking this will either:
- Cause you to lose (wrong numbers were assigned)
- Advance you to the next level (as shown by the "LvL" lights in the top right
There are four levels total, but beware: While the basic gameplay remains the same, the symbols themselves grow more complex and harder to distinguish.
Once you beat level 4, you win!
Regarding the Game Jam:
This is my very first game jam entry, and in fact my very first technically complete game in general! The experience has been a huge learning experience, and I can't wait to keep improving my knowledge and skills in future jams.
The theme was "Power", and I decided to use the exponential phrasing "To the power of ___" as the thematic base of the game. The result was basically a convoluted form of algebra, so I guess you could label this as an educational game if you wanted.
What I didn't add, but would have if I had more time:
- Music and SFX (Clicks when buttons were pressed, machine sounds, increasing intensity of music for each level, etc.)
- An in-game tutorial
- More levels
- A score system (calculated based on time left and attempts left unsused)
